Job Summary:

In 2020, Arizona voters passed Proposition 207, the Smart and Safe Arizona Act, which reformed Arizona's marijuana laws. One aspect of that law permits expungement of convictions and other records relating to certain marijuana offenses. The Attorney General's Office is hiring an Assistant Attorney General lead efforts at the Attorney General's Office to expand access to expungement under this law across Arizona.

Position will be in the Attorney General's Office Solicitor General's Office/Special Litigation Section.

The Assistant Attorney General will work with courts and other stakeholders to design programs that will more efficiently allow expungement of qualifying records. The Assistant Attorney General will also work on the filing of expungement petitions.

Position is limited funding for a three-year period.

Remote Options: This position may be eligible for Remote Work two days a week.

Job Duties:

The individual hired for this position will be the attorney primarily responsible for handling expungement-related issues for the Attorney General's Office. The position will include designing resources for individuals seeking expungement, performing trainings and other education programs, filing petitions for expungement, and working with the courts and other stakeholders to design programs that will more efficiently allow expungement of qualifying records.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs):

Knowledge of Arizona criminal law and procedures and court practices in Arizona counties.
Skills in legal research and writing legal documents.
Skills in working with outside stakeholders, including the courts.
Skills in designing, organizing, and providing training to a variety of audiences.
Ability to effectively plan, organize, direct and monitor legal work and other tasks.
Ability to coordinate activities with a variety of stakeholders inside the AG's Office and elsewhere.
Ability to apply analytical and problem-solving methods to systems and programs.
Ability to encourage teamwork through collaboration and communication.

Selective Preference(s):

Ideal candidate will have experience as an attorney in the criminal justice system.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
•Travel is required for this position. A valid Arizona Driver's License is required, along with consent to have your driving record run periodically.
•Admission to, and good standing with, the Arizona State Bar is required (include on resume the date(s) of admission in Arizona and any other states). Candidate must have an active Arizona State Bar license.
•Attorney applicants are required to submit a writing sample with their resume/application profile.
The writing sample should contain an analysis of some substantive legal issue and provide insight concerning your ability to think and to explain and advocate for a particular position.
